The Wrestling Observer Newsletter has more details on the return, including why there is a lack of foreign wrestlers and more.

At this time it’s unknown what NJPW will do for English commentary. There is currently no date set for the English announcers to come to Japan, but it’s possible they could have Kevin Kelly record from home as WWE is doing with Mauro Ranallo and Beth Phoenix.

Of note in the tournament is that there are only two foreign wrestlers: Gabriel Kidd and Zack Sabre Jr. The belief is that it will be months before other foreign talent (such as IWGP US Champion Jon Moxley) can come in. The target date for that is some time in October, but it could be sooner. Bringing a foreigner in would require two weeks of quarantine when they arrive before they are allowed to work. It’s believed that wrestlers like Will Ospreay and Juice Robinson could be back sooner, but they couldn’t be added to the New Japan Cup due to time constraints. Both live in Japan but went to their home countries at the start of the pandemic and haven’t been able to come back yet.

The lack of availability for some talent resulted in fifteen new spots from the original 32 in the cup, including more junior heavyweights than had ever been used.

According to PW Insider, New Japan Pro Wrestling taped a secret show entitled “Lion’s Break Collision” earlier today in Los Angeles. Reports are that roughly 9-10 matches were filmed with mostly American talent including Jeff Cobb, Rocky Romero, Clark Conners, TJP, Alex Coughlin, and Karl Fredericks.

Also notable is that former MLW heavyweight champion “Filthy” Tom Lawlor made his official NJPW debut.

No word as to when these tapings will air. NJPW does return to action this Monday in what will be their first event since February due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Last night, we reported that New Japan Pro Wrestling held a secret taping in Los Angeles, which included up to 10 matches and the promotional debut of MLW superstar “Filthy” Tom Lawlor.

In an update from PW Insider, we now know that Lawlor worked two singles-bouts during the taping. One against Rocky Romero and the other against LA Dojo breakout Alex Coughlin. MLW also promoted Lawlor’s appearance on their website by hyping an “inter-promotional” matchup.

The new report also says the location of the taping was at the Oceanville Pavillion in Port Hueneme, with production coming from Dave Marquez’s Championship Wrestling from Hollywood.

Another confirmed matchup that took place was Tyler Bateman against ROH’s Brody King.

Ero serio ma dentro mi me ero convinto che per un motivo non sarei riuscito a portare a termine quest'obiettivo. Ed invece, al di là dell'epidemia...

Stò diventando piano piano "mark" di Zack Sabre Jr, e dire che fino all'altro ieri mi annoiava non poco. Ed invece. Hype totale per il Day 3 ma non solo per lui (Kenta e SANADA).

... per il quale ho iniziato a markare brutalmente già durante il G1. E il resto è storia



Come è storia il fatto che Sabre Jr. per quei due match che avevo visto in WWE non mi aveva per nulla impressionato, riconoscendone le abilità, ma anche qua mese dopo mese credo sia diventato uno di quelli per cui marko abbestia.


Comunque.

SANADA deve vincere. Non è solo pronostico blindmark ma il fatto che sia l'unico degli LIJ senza una cintura mi fà pensare ad uno scontro "fratricida" anche solo per smuovere un pò le acque nelle Stables. Naito comunque si confermerà, con tutto il bene che voglio a SANADA, e gli voglio tanto ma tanto bene, non riesco a vederlo nemmeno io Championship Material.

Credo come sempre che ci saranno un po' di tag prima dei match del torneo, per costruire i futuri scontri delle prossime giornate.

Comunque non mi aspetto moltissimo dalla maggior parte dei match del primo turno.
Hype per Suzuki vs Nagata che si prospetta roba fomentosissima, SHO vs Takagi che è una delle rivalità preferite dello scorso anno, Ibushi Sabre che sono una garanzia. Però mi stuzzicano anche Ishii vs Despy e Kojima vs EVIL.

Taguchi vs SANADA potrebbe essere divertente come comedy, però se Taguchi vince a sorpresa, la mia reazione potrebbe essere tipo questa:
