NJPW part of united pro-wrestling front in govt. talks on COVID-19
Hiroshi Tanahashi and Chairman Naoki Sugabayashi join representatives from multiple promotions in consultation with Japanese government



On Wednesday April 15, led by Bushiroad Company Director Takaaki Kidani, Hiroshi Tanahashi and NJPW Chairman Naoki Sugabayashi joined representatives from STARDOM, Pro Wrestling NOAH, All Japan Pro-Wrestling, DDT Pro-Wrestling, Diana and Tokyo Joshi Pro-Wrestling at Tokyo’s Lower House Assembly Hall. Together the company representatives were present to consult with the Japanese Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, (and former NJPW wrestler) Hiroshi Hase to discuss how the COVID-19 crisis has affected the professional wrestling industry in Japan.

The representatives met with Hase with the goal of presenting a request for Coronavirus testing kits for wrestlers and staff in the industry, as well as support to cover pay for wrestlers as events have cancelled under Japan’s current state of emergency in reaction to the virus. Said Kidani: ‘This formal proposal has my name signed at the bottom, but the issues covered are ones that affect the entire professional wrestling industry as well as all of sports and live entertainment. I hope that it will be accepted as such.’

Formal proposal

‘The current Novel Coronavirus pandemic has seriously affected the entire professional wrestling industry, including but not limited to Bushiroad Group members New Japan Pro-Wrestling and STARDOM.

Professional wrestling is a contact sport, and even matches without the public present is a dangerous undertaking in the current climate. We can not allow the flame of professional wrestling that has burned brightly in this country for over half a century to be exterminated.

Therefore, we hereby make the following requests:

1.Testing kits

While we understand that top priority for medical supplies must go to those in centers on the front lines of battling this disease, if at all possible, we request that kits may be supplied to test and protect wrestlers and staff within the industry.

2.Compensation for contracted wrestlers

Not only the wrestlers under contract in our group of companies, but those in the industry at large are designated as contractors whose livelihood is therefore threatened by not being able to perform in the current climate. We ask that contracted wrestlers be met with benefits and protections befitting of full time employees. ‘



Mr. Hase received Kidani’s proposal and listened to his explanations with great interest before seeking the opinion of the wrestlers present.

‘While events have been cancelled, our wrestlers have been training diligently and maintaining their focus for an eventual return. Yes, not being able to wrestle does make a lot of us concerned for our livelihoods, but in the world of sports, be that baseball, soccer, or sumo, I feel that professional wrestling should be the anchor. I think it should be acceptable for professional wrestling to be the last sport to return to full activity. I want people to know that when professional wrestling is back, then and only then it means truly that Japanese entertainment has properly recovered.’

‘On a personal note, on February 19, I was scheduled to have a birthday party event, which was cancelled. On March 8, we streamed a live event with no fans in Korakuen Hall, but since then there have been cancellations after cancellations. We list our occupations as professional wrestlers, but to not have matches is, of course, incredibly frustrating. If we have access to testing kits for wrestlers and staff, it can put minds at ease and help us return to active duty. Rather than sitting and waiting for an unclear point in the future, to be able to take some kind of action like we’re doing today is something I’m extremely grateful for. I hope this can help the entire industry come back strong.’



There followed an explanation from a representative from the government’s sporting body about how various sports have attempted to combat the spread of COVID-19 through the use of temperature checks and hand sanitizers at venues, as well as a fundraising system whereby ticket refunds can be given back to organizations as a tax deductible donation. Finally, Hase himself delivered a statement.

‘Thank you to the representatives of the professional wrestling industry for sharing their plight, as well as to for the explanations from official bodies today. There are measures we can enact to assist enterprises, promotions and wrestlers during these times, and I would like to continue to discuss them further. This situation will not last forever. Speedy and accurate testing, effective treatment and medicinal development are all things the whole world is working together on. Professional wrestling has a huge and very important role in raising the flag of victory over COVID-19. I ask all staff members and all wrestlers to keep working to be in the best shape possible to spread joy to the fans with incredible matches very soon.’



Takaaki Kidani stated after the session ‘This was a big first step not just for professional wrestling, but for live entertainment at large. The goal of being fully active again is still some distance away, but today we were able to discuss various methods of support, and I am absolutely glad I was able to present this proposal.’

Owens/Romero. Parte molto soft e non pensavo si sviluppasse benissimo, poi a un certo punto si sviluppa bene e si costruisce con tutto rispetto direi. 6
RNR&Tana/Zayne,Conners&TJP. Giusto un veterani/Rookie mascherato diciamo.

Archer/Cobb. Buono, nel senso niente di eclatante, ma si sviluppa bene, solido. 6

Phantasmo&Ishimori/Mask&Uemura. Divertente opener direi.
6-men. Classico.
8-men. Classico.

Eagles&Lee/BUSHI&Takahashi. Inizia maluccio, cioè alcuni errori e cose così, però poi si alza di tono e il match viene a salvarsi, per fortuna dato i nomi coinvolti. Rimane un match in prospettiva, ma comunque divertente. 6

White&KENTA/SANADA&Naito. Diciamo che è troppo lungo, che è un po' il grosso problema di White questo, quello di non riuscire a gestire bene i tempi lunghi, creando troppi punti morti. Gli spot sono buoni e il finale è bello intenso. 6

Suzuki&Taichi/Moxley&Okada. Alla fin fine il match di per sè ha senso per teaserare Suzuki/Mox. Il resto con Taichi e con Okada è molto inserito giusto per. Quindi un 6 di fiducia.

Ishii/EVIL. CLassico match di Ishii e di EVIL, quindi abbastanza limitato nell'azione, anche qui gli si concede troppo spazio nel lottato, cosa che i due insomma non so quanto potrebbero davvero durare senza un avversario che li conduce, quindi un match tutto sommato anche piacevole, ma lontano dagli standard. 6

Takagi/Goto. Posso capire allora un po' lo sviluppo del match di prima, comunque qui si è giocato con questo schema, con due che se la giocano su questo stile. Niente di eclatante in realtà, speravo e pensamo molto meglio, ma immagino si siano tenuti anche a meno per far meglio poi. 6.5

Night 2

Hanare/Tsuji. Solito schema del rookie che viene malmenato dal tizio grande e grosso, e scarso in questo caso.
6-Men. Solito schema del rookie che viene malmenato, questa volta dai miei vecchietti preferiti evah.

Kidd/Phantasmo. Oh che bello, a me Kidd piace tanto e non mi ricordavo si fosse fatto il tour in jappolandia. Con Phantasmo puntano sul sicuro, credo vengano dalla stessa scuola in englaterra. Abbastanza sottotono, un po' di mettersi in mostra, ma giusto così. 6 politico.

CHAOS/Ingobernables. Solito 6-man tag, poco da dire.
Roppongi,Moxley&Taguchi/Suzuki-Gun. Oh un bel mischione di stili, dalla brawlerata pesante in giro per l'arena, alle cose da junior, un bel match a sqaudre, mi sono proprio divertito e qualcosa che fuoriesce da uno schema un po' classico. 6.5

Ingobernables/BULLET. Classico match a 6, costruisce bene il tutto, lavora bene sui vari aspetti, un buon pre-pre ME. 6

Sabre/Ospreay. SI è reso evidente come Ospreay sia un all-rounder, non mi stupisce che l'idea di fondo del match fosse sostanzialmente quella, ovvero, permettere a Will di mettere in mostra il suo reale background. Quindi riesce a inserirsi e a inserire le sue modalità più flyier in un match classico di Sabre, per quanto Zack a me piace, perchè erede di un certo modo inglese, qui assume spesso un modello molto stereotipato e spesso bidimensionale, quindi un'amalgama ben fatta, che mette in evidenza sia i valori di Sabre che, soprattutto, la malleabilità di Will. 7+

Okada/Taichi. C'è questa tendenza di dare un minutaggio alto anche quando questa non è necessaria ma sei nel ME, quindi gente come White o Taichi che non hanno nulla da dire oltre i 10/15 minuti si trovano spesso a fare robe, come questo da 30 TRENA minuti. Che dire, un fallimento.


4 febbraio

Taguchi/Kiddo.
Ishimori/Uemura.
Makabe&Honma/Henare&Tsuji.
Vabbeh, questi tre match sono sotanzialmente uguali, nel senso, lo schema del rookie che viene malmenato, riesce a far bene tutto sommato contro i vecchi (nota per me, ma Ishimori è così vecchio pure lui?) e via.

Tenzan&Nakanishi/Suzuki-Gun. Tag concettualmente simile, ma in questo caso con lo scopo di costruire il ritiro di Nakanishi.
Ingobernables/CHAOS. Classico 6-man tag, niente da dire.
Ingobernables/BULLET. Un 6-man, ma con momenti migliori, la presenza di Naito ha sicuramente aiutato nella costruzione allo stesso. 6

Choas/Suzuki-Gun. Un match piacevole, comunque i match a squadre a eliminazione sono sempre ben sentiti in jappolandia, dunque ben costruito come main event e assolutamente con momenti ben realizzati. 6.5

5 febbraio

Kidd/Uemura.
Taguchi/Tsuji.
Makabe&Honma/Tenzan&Nakanishi.
Tutti e tre i match seguono la struttura classica. Il primo tra due rookie, dove il più veterano risulta migliore, il secondo dove il vecchio malmena il rookie e si esalta, il terzo che è in preparazione al ritiro, quindi fa un po' il giro della sua generazione.

Chaos/Suzuki. Breve ma divertente.
Ingobernables/Harane&Goto. Idem, caruccio.
Suzuki-Gun/Chaos, giusta durata.

BULLET/Ingobernables, che dire, un livello sotto a quello della sera prima, ma comunque ben strutturato e ben costruito. 6


6 febbraio

Tsuji/Uemura. Diciamo che Tsuji ci vuole mostrare e far capire perchè lui abbia un knee-pad e Uemura non ancora.
Phantasmo/Kidd. Un livello più basso di quello precedente.
Tenzan&Nakanishi/Henare&Honma, simpatico match tra anziani e sega.

CHAOS/Suzuki-Gun. Bon finale in DQ che ci sta per continuare a lavorare sul feud.
6-Man. Poco da dire, match tranquillo, tranquillo.

Ingobernables/BULLET. Diciamo che mettere il campione sia comunque sinonimo di un match costruito un minimo a livello narrativo. 6
Match per i NEVER. Divertente, niente di trascendentale ma sicuramente divertente e che ti tiene incollato, con un cambio di titolo sensato e una bella costruzione in divenire. 6.5


New Beginning Osaka

Vecchi che si menano. A me comunque pensare che TenKoji e Nagata possano ritirarsi sale il magone, 15 anni fa quando iniziai a guardare la NJPW/AJPW loro stavano al top del mondo

Jr. Tag. Match abbastanza standard, non brutto, ma per una difesa, deludente. 6
Roba a 8. Certo che vedere il Tana qui, fa male, perchè ti viene in mente che potrebbe finire a fare la chioccia ai giovini, o comunque in robe tra midcarder o con altri vecchi e che potrebbe ritirarsi pure lui mmm bello il post con i due team face che sembrano scazzare

CHAOS/Suzuki-GUn, bon non brutto, ma inutilissimo dato che i quattro si sono già sfidati. Quindi onestamente fottesega.
SANADA/White. Per quanto sia bravo Sanada hai un White inversamente proprozionale come segaccia. Cioè che poi segaccia non lo è, solo che non è da main event e nemmeno da questo tipo di match, spiace dirlo, ma è un buco nell'acqua e so che ci hanno puntato su molto, ma è il caso di considerare l'esperimento fallito e relegarlo a ruoli secondari.

Lee/Takahashi. Loro possono lottare per sempre e sempre e sempre Tra l'altro è il match numero 19 e quasi quasi, ci apriamo un megatopic che cazzo. Che alzano l'asticella ogni cazzo di volta eh ciaone. 7.5

Moxley/Suzuki. Bellino dai, mi aspettato quello che ho avuto. UNa brawlerata ben fatta. 6.5

KENTA/Naito. Match molto solido, con un finale che vale tutta la costruzione, KENTA si mostra limitato ancora, è un nuovo wrestler dopo la tragedia che lo ha colpito, non possiamo ricordarci e vivere dei match di ventimila anni fa, ma Naito mette un'intensità da doppio campione che nell'ultimo periodo non metteva, si è caricato questo ruolo sulle spalle ben bene. Ottimo lavoro. 7


Ritiro di Tiger Hattori

Vabbeh, tutti match niente di che, il ME è carino perchè è il ME, ma tanto in questo evento il focus era ovviamente su Tiger Hattori e il suo ritiro, fottesega dei match.

Suzuki-Gun/CHAOS&Uemura. Le mazzata di Suzuki su Uemura.
Okada, Yano e Cabana tipo il team più strano del mondo.

8-man, mi interessa vedere le frizioni se ci sono tra i FinJuice e TanaKota. Tutto abbastanza liscio, che paracarri i gorilloni madonna.

Roppongi/Romero&Taguchi. Quello che mi aspettavo, una bella storie, buoni spot, diciamo che il finale e il post valgono la visione in sommatoria. 6.5
Shingo/Ishii. Bon alla fine Ishii è questo, cioè non esce da questo schema e gli va anche bene visto che è andato over nel mondo facendo così, qindi perchè cambiare? Shingo dunque si limita molto su quanto potrebbe davvero rendere sul quadrato e quindi se ne esce un buon match, ma niente di davvero spessore. 6.5

Kidd&Mask/Tsuji&Uemura. Classico tag di rookie con vetarano, si mettono un po' in mostra.
8-Man. Classico match a più uomini.
6-Man divertente.

I vecchi che menano i giovani sempre figo.
Anche il 6-Man cogli Junior esce bellino, bellino.
Never, esce una cosa mezza comedy, ma ok.

NJPW star Kazuchika Okada is helping out with coronavirus relief efforts in Japan.

NJPW announced today that Okada has elected to donate five million yen -- which currently converts to $46,935 in US dollars -- to the Nippon Foundation's special coronavirus relief fund. NJPW wrote that the donation will support doctors, nurses, and volunteers who are working on the front lines combating the coronavirus in Japan.

Okada issued a statement about the donation:

I’m always grateful for NJPW fans’ support, and it’s my hope that I can get back to hearing the cheers of sold out crowds as soon as possible.

It’s usually me receiving the support and power of the people, but now I feel it’s my turn to lend support to medical staff fighting this disease.

I hope fans continue to stay home and stay healthy, so that we can return to the ring as soon as possible.

NJPW announced earlier this week that they've canceled this year's Best of the Super Juniors tour, which was set to take place from May 12 to June 6. The coronavirus pandemic has also forced NJPW to postpone Wrestle Dynasty at Madison Square Garden to 2021.

In NJPW's statement announcing the cancellation of the Best of the Super Juniors tour, the promotion wrote that they're "continuing to explore the possibility of presenting matches without fans in attendance if staff and wrestler health and safety can be protected to the highest possible standard."
