If feelers reaching us are anything to go by, then Nigeria’s Continental Wrestling Alliance, CWA world heavyweight king, Great Power Uti could be in for more troubles than anticipated at the forthcoming World Peace Cup Wrestling Championship billed to hold in Nigeria next month. This is sequel to the possible decision of the Championship Fight Committee to let America’s Abyss have his way against the Champion. “
We were informed that, earlier, the Committee which is headed by the President of the CWA International, Jean Andrea Pamphile, who was a world renowned professional mats man in his fighting days, had decreed that no fighter had the right to choose his opponent. However, signals coming from the US base of the CWA show that, there could be a slight clause to that decision. We are thinking of allowing some of the fighters have their ways in some circumstances. In such cases, the bouts would be non-challenge contests. It would only create an arena for such wrestlers to test their might or power against their long-sought after ‘foes’.”
On the Uti/Abyss possible clash, Pamphile explained that the CWA International could approve the fight, but that it would be to add more glamour to the Peace Cup Championship. “It could be approved. It would add some more colours to the whole show with a celebrated American wrestler squaring-up Nigeria’s Great Power Uti. Again, it would be a non-contest affair. But if the Championship Committee comes up with a ranking and pairing that cramps both great men in the ring, then they have to slug it out as a title clash.”
Abyss had earlier requested the Committee to pair him against Uti, the champion he, (Abyss) had been craving to meet “so as to teach him some new lessons in the game and take the title back to America”. The World Peace Cup Wrestling Championship is expected to be held in no fewer than the entire six geo-political zones of the country from July 6 –– July 26, 2007. Power Uti is to lead the Nigerian team of about seven fighters, while Abyss is to lead an equal number of American pro fighters to the global wrestling rumble in the ring. Professional wrestlers from Canada, Spain, Germany, Italy, South Africa, and Uganda amongst other world-acknowledged wrestling nations are expected to be part of the maiden Peace Cup ring brawl. Meanwhile, Nigeria’s Uti (aka The Great Power Uti) has intensified his training programme and re-organized his daily schedule. The Nigerian told us in an interview that he was not ready to take anything for granted because the American is equally a good fighter.
“I am not taking anything for granted. My name, title and my country’s name is at stake. Bringing the World Peace Cup to Nigeria in the first place, is an honour and an achievement. But if it must worth its salt, then I must do everything within my fighting armory to ensure that I make Nigeria and Nigerians proud. I am ready to take on any wrestler from any part of the world that I am paired against during the Championship. And that means I have to work extra hard to grab success in the ring by all means. Professional wrestling is an art and I know and have all it requires and takes to be a champion that I am. I know too that, as the undisputed king of the CWA World heavyweight, every fighter would want to take on me. I tell you, my brother, they will run into a rock in me,” Uti boasted flexing his arm muscles.
